Voluntary Compliance Assurance Programs
At CVR Energy, compliance with laws and regulations are a top priority. That's why we've voluntarily made a significant investment in compliance assurance programs for all of our facilities. These programs target consistent and reliable processes and procedures to assist in our compliance efforts. Investing in these programs is not required of us, but we want to do it because it is the right way to run our business, and the right way to take care of our communities.
Community Advisory Panel
CVR Energy believes in maintaining meaningful relationships in the communities in which we live and work. One way we connect with our neighbors in Coffeyville is through a Community Advisory Panel, which consists of company and civic leaders, as well as educators, residents and business owners. We meet regularly to encourage two-way communication with our neighbors about our operations and progress.
Employee-Driven Safety Process
At the refinery, we maintain a voluntary, behavior-based safety process entitled SPEED, which stands for Safety Performance Enhances Employee Development. SPEED is driven by our employees' commitment to health and safety. Employees are trained on best safety practices and make weekly observations of fellow employees performing job tasks. During and after the observation, any exemplary and at-risk behavior is addressed. The goals and objectives of this process include an increased awareness of safety issues, continuous improvement in process and procedures, and a decrease in work injuries. Through the SPEED process, which has been in place since 1999, the refinery's OSHA lost workday incident rates have dropped significantly, giving the facility an improved safety record. In fact, the refinery's safety record received recognition by the National Petrochemical & Refiners Association (NPRA) in 2000, 2003, 2006 and 2007, when it bestowed the refinery with the Gold Award. Refinery employees also reached a never-before-achieved safety milestone in March 2007 by working more than one million hours without a lost-time accident.
In addition, our nitrogen fertilizer employees continue to excel in personal safety in the workplace. The employees reached safety milestones in 2005 and in 2007 with employees having zero days away from work caused by an accident — a tremendous accomplishment in a coke gasification nitrogen fertilizer facility.
